5 Tips for Improving Curb Appeal

Are you thinking about selling your home? Or maybe you’re not thinking about selling, but you just want your home to have a nice, clean look so that when people come over they have a good first impression. Or maybe, you just want to come home from work and be able to admire the home that you’ve worked so hard for. It’s so nice to come home at the end of the day and love what you see! So we want to give you some tips on how to improve your home’s curb appeal. We’ve thrown in a couple of tips that you’re probably not going to see on every other post out there about improving your curb appeal, so take a look!

1. How does your door look?

Is your door faded? Is it rotting anywhere? Is the kick plate messed up on the bottom? Is the handle jiggly? Take some time to go outside and see what your door looks like in the eyes of your guests or a potential homebuyer.

Also, don’t forget to check your doorbell! This is especially important if you’re selling your home. You’ll notice when you watch HGTV that buyers want easy. They want turnkey. And little things, like needing to replace a doorbell, start to add up. Plus, the doorbell is one of the first impressions your house makes! (If you have a door knocker, check to make sure it’s not loose.)

2. What about your paint and siding?

How is your siding, and your exterior paint? If you’re not looking to sell, you might think about updating the color. Maybe you bought the house years ago, and it’s a color you were never crazy about but never had the time to do anything about it. Is it time to go ahead and fix that now? Or, maybe you are selling the house, and you chose a more exotic color that a lot of people might not like—now is the time to go to a more neutral color.

Does your siding need to be replaced? Does it need to be washed? Is it clean? And remember—we can help you out with any of this!

3. Don’t forget your roof!

Many people don’t pay attention to this, but if a potential homebuyer walks up and they see a bunch of rotting shingles or missing shingles, or maybe your gutters are all messed up—that’s a turnoff. Your potential buyers will realize that these are all things that they’re going to have to fix. And if you’re not selling right now, you still want to pay attention to the state of your roof and make sure it’s in good condition. If you need to, call a reputable roofer to come look at your roof and see if it needs any repairs.

4. How is your landscaping?

We know that you see this on every post about curb appeal, but it’s so important! Make sure your yard is free of weeds and neatly mowed. Even if you’re not selling you might be in a neighborhood with an HOA that has rules about keeping the lawn tidy. Your fence goes into this category as well, especially if it’s visible from the street. Make sure you don’t have areas where your fence is rotting, and that it’s stained properly.

5. Check your windows.

Are they clean? Do they need to be replaced? Are they energy-efficient? From a curb appeal point of view, you want to make sure that you’re taking care of the exterior part of your home and the windows are a part of that. Are there areas where water is seeping in and leading to rot on the inside?

You work so hard for this house, let’s make sure that you love what you see! We want you to drive home from work and say “Oh yeah, this is great! I love my house!” Hopefully, we gave you a tip or two to make that happen that you haven’t heard before.

If you need any help with the exterior painting portion of this (and as always, with the interior), let us know! We’ll be happy to come out and give you a free estimate!

If you’re selling your home we wish you good luck on selling it quickly. If you’re staying in your home, we hope you enjoy it for many years to come!
