You’ve talked to contractors, you’ve gotten quotes, and you’ve compared them. But what kinds of things should you be looking for? Here are a few basic things:

1. Are they bonded and insured?

It’s important to make sure that your contractor is bonded and insured. This way if anything goes wrong, you’ll know you’re covered. If your contractor has an accident and breaks something in your house, or if any of your belongings are destroyed, repairs and replacement will be covered for you. 

2. What kind of materials do they use?

We always recommend that customers ask about the materials the contractors will use. Will they use builder grade paint at $7 per gallon? Or the top of the line paint at $70 per gallon? For a 4,000 square foot house, one quote could be $2000 different from another just based on the quality of materials used. This makes easier to compare estimates if the pricing is different.

3. Who will be doing the work?

A solid company has people that they use on an everyday basis, as opposed to a company who picks their workers off a corner to come paint your house. We’ve been to several jobs where we have had to either come in and help homeowners get all the mess straightened out, or redo work that wasn’t done well in the first place. You want to make sure you are hiring professionals who do this work on an everyday basis, and really know what they’re doing. 

So when you’re comparing quotes, remember to look for these things. Always hire someone bonded and insured, check out the materials they’ll use for quality and pricing, and ask about who will actually be coming to your house to do the work and what experience they have.
