How to Maintain Hardwood Floors
So you have some beautiful hardwood floors! Hardwood floors are very nice, but they require some upkeep. Here are some tips on how to keep your floors looking great.
1. Start with your front door
Have a clean welcome mat. You probably have a welcome mat, but when was the last time you cleaned it? A dirty welcome mat will just let people track in dirt! By starting at your door with a clean welcome mat, you can ensure that you and your guests come in with clean shoes. You can even make it a rule to take your shoes off when you come in the door. This will help to keep your floors cleaner, and help protect against scrapes, etc.
2. Protect your floor from furniture scrapes
Make sure you have rugs under your furniture, such as your coffee table, side tables, and dining room tables. If you are not a fan of rugs that’s fine, you can put felt pads underneath your couch or table and chair legs to avoid scratches. But do use something!
3. Keep your floors dry
When it comes to cleaning up spills and dirt—be careful not to get your wood floors wet! Water is a hardwood floor’s worst enemy. If you have spills, get them up quickly. To keep your floor clean choose sweeping and vacuuming over wet mopping. The robot vacuums that prowl around your house looking for crumbs are perfect for hardwood floors!
4. Protect your floor from paint
If you’re going to be painting, take extra precautions to protect your hardwood floors. We recommend using builder’s quality paper as opposed to drop cloths. This will ensure that your floors stay securely covered because drop cloths have a tendency to move.
Those are four ways you can keep your hardwood floors looking pristine and beautiful for a very long time.
