How to Prepare Brick For Exterior Painting

prepare brick for exterior painting

When it comes to changing the look of your home’s exterior, you have a few options.

One option, if your HOA allows this, is to paint your brick. Like everything else, there’s a process involved in painting your brick. First you have to make sure you don’t have mildew on the brick. This that greenish color you sometimes see near the bottom of a wall. If you have mildew, then your first step is to take care of that, even before you power wash the wall. Treat the mildew by applying a solution of 50% bleach and 50% water. Mist all the mildew with that solution, and then power wash the wall to get all the mildew and dirt washed away.

Once the wall is clean, we recommend applying a primer that’s made specifically for brick. Don’t use just any primer! We use a product from Sherwin Williams called Loxon. We’ve been using this for years, and it’s the best we’ve found!

After you’ve applied the primer you can move ahead with prepping the wall, caulking it, and then finish off by applying two coats of paint.
