How to Keep Your Home Secure While On Vacation
For all your parents out there, the school year is winding down! It’s time for summer to start, and that means summer vacations. Are you planning some great trips this summer? What are you going to do about your home while you’re away? Here are some tips to help make sure your home is protected if you’re going to be gone for an extended time on vacation.
1. Get a door camera.
Consider investing in one of those doorbell cameras like Ring. This way if you have a package delivered, or if anyone who shouldn’t be at your house comes to your house, the Ring will send you a message on your phone and you can talk to the person, even if you’re away. The person at your door won’t be able to tell if you’re home or not! (Though if you talk to them on video, the beach in the background might be a giveaway.) These systems also record what they see, so it can be helpful to have a record of people who come to your house in case of theft.
2. Invest in smart lights.
These are lights that can be controlled from your smartphone. These give you the ability to turn lights off and on at certain times, even when you’re not home. This way you don’t have to leave your home completely dark for a week. If someone is scouting out your home and they see a light on all the time, all night long, they’ll know that you’re not there and you just left a light on. With smart lights you can vary the lighting as if you’re there.
3. Talk to your neighbors.
Here’s an old-school tip! Talk to your neighbors, and let them know you’re going to be away! Maybe have one of them pick up your mail and keep an eye on things. We have a lot of great technology to help us, but nothing beats actual people right there. Let your neighbors know what your plans are and when you will return.
4. Take advantage of the time to remodel.
We have customers who choose the times they’ll be away on vacation to get their remodeling or painting done! Often when we’re there remodeling part of your house, that part is not functional for you while we work on it. Instead of sticking around you can go have fun on vacation while we do the work. We have a lockbox we put on your home that allows us to get in and out, but it’s also secure when we’re not in your home. So if you’re planning a remodel or to get the interior of your house repainted, think about timing it for your vacation. Then you will to come home to a safe, secure, and newly-remodeled house!
We hope this helps, and we hope you have a great summer!
