Summertime Maintenance Tips for Your Home

It’s summertime, and you know that in Texas that means it’s about to get scorching hot. It’s already really hot! As a homeowner, it’s very important to be proactive, rather than reactive, to the summer weather. Here are a few home maintenance items you should think about to keep your home in good shape this summer:

1. Check your detectors.

Take this time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. We recommend that you do this every season change, so as you’re going from winter to spring, or from spring to summer, and then summer to fall and fall to winter, check your detectors! Those are good intervals to make sure the batteries are still good and your equipment is in working order. You don’t want to wait until there’s an emergency to find that they’re not functioning properly!

2. Water your yard and your foundation.

But first, it’s important to check with your city to make sure you’re not violating any watering restrictions. Some cities have a watering schedule, and if yours does you should follow it. You can usually find this on your city’s website. Keep an eye on the weather as well, so you don’t end up watering only to have it rain.

But do water—watering your yard will help to keep your foundation from cracking.

3. Make sure your outdoor space is safe.

Check your patio or outdoor living space. We love to have cookouts and barbecues in the summertime, but make sure these spaces are in good shape. Look around and check to see if there are any nails sticking out. If you have a deck, make sure you don’t have any areas where the wood is rotting. You want to not only have a fun entertaining space, but also a safe one! Especially if you have young children over. But even if you don’t have kids around, you don’t want anything in your entertainment area that could potentially be a hazard. So look it over and make sure everything is looking good.

On top of these three things, you want to stay on top of your normal maintenance, especially changing out your air conditioner filters. Be safe, be smart, and always remember to drink plenty of water in this Texas heat! Have a great summer!
